How to choose the right teacher for you

Five practical questions to ask before you book your first lesson with a new teacher.

A good teacher is not just someone who knows the subject. It's someone whose way of explaining clicks with the way you learn. Before you book, run through these questions.

1. What exactly do you want to get out of it?

"Get better at guitar" is hard to plan for. "Play three songs at a friend's wedding in June" is easy. Write your goal down in one sentence and share it with the teacher in your first message.

2. Does their experience match your goal?

Read the teacher's headline, subjects and bio. Someone who prepares students for exams teaches differently from someone who teaches for fun. Neither is better — they just fit different goals.

3. In person or video?

In-person lessons are great for hands-on skills like instruments, sports or art. Video lessons save travel time and work well for languages, math, coding and most theory. Many teachers on TeachMe offer both.

4. Send a message first

A short chat tells you a lot: how quickly they reply, whether they ask about your goals, and whether you feel comfortable. Use the Message button on any teacher's page.

5. Treat the first lesson as a trial

Book one lesson before committing to a schedule. Afterwards, ask yourself: did I learn something concrete? Do I want to come back? If yes — book the next one while it's fresh.
