Online vs in-person lessons: which is better?
The honest pros and cons of video lessons and face-to-face lessons, and how to pick for your subject.
Neither format wins every time. The right choice depends on the subject, your schedule and how you like to learn.
When video lessons shine
- No travel, so shorter or more frequent lessons are realistic
- A much wider choice of teachers, not just those nearby
- Easy to share screens, documents and code
- Great for languages, math, science, writing and exam prep
When in-person lessons shine
- Hands-on skills where posture or technique matters: instruments, dance, sports, crafts
- Younger learners who focus better with someone in the room
- Students who simply learn better face to face
Tips for a great video lesson
- Use headphones to avoid echo
- Sit facing a window or lamp so your face is lit
- Keep a notebook nearby — writing by hand helps memory
- Join a couple of minutes early to check your camera and mic
On TeachMe, video lessons happen right in the app — no extra downloads. When a lesson is confirmed, the Join button appears on your Lessons page shortly before it starts.
